History of Rehavia

Aza Road and Keren Kayemet Street run through Rehavia, a garden suburb established in the 1920's and 1930's. Aza Road's name is derived from the city of Gaza (Aza in Hebrew, sometimes spelled 'Azza'), since the route used to serve as the main road from Jerusalem to the Southern Coastal Plain. Keren Kayemet Street is named after the the Jewish National Fund, one of the most important institutions of the Zionist movement.

After World War I, the Greek patriarchate in Jerusalem needed large sums of money to pay its debts and offered to sell pieces of land from its vast complex of holdings.

The land purchased by the Jews included the locations of Rehavia, Ben Yehuda Street, the Mamila Commercial centre and Ramat Rachel.

Rehavia, first called "Gingeria," founded in 1924, was designed as a luxury neighborhood for white-collar workers and professional people. Within several years, the neighborhood had over 2,000 residents including immigrants from Germany, Britain and the United States.

Because of the rising cost of land and the expensive requirement that all buildings be built with Jerusalem stone, the regulations for stone construction were relaxed in the 1930's and 1940's and some buildings were constructed of concrete.

Today, Rehavia stretches from the Nahlaot and Sha'arey Hessed neighbourhoods on the north, Talbiyeh and Katamon on the south and Keren Hayesod and King George Streets on the east.

There are many Zionist and cultural institutions in Rehavia, including the Jewish Agency and the JNF (Keren Kayemet) centres, as well as the Yad Ben Zvi Institute.

Testimonials

My wife and I choose this apartment based on the previous reviews which are very accurate. So, I will be brief to describe our 6-night stay.

The apartment was very clean, safe and quiet. Well located (2 km from Jaffa Gate and closer to the Israeli Museum). Owners are charming.

Restaurants, including one 180 m away up Azza Street open Friday night, and groceries close by.

Highly recommended.

My boyfriend and I stayed for 5 nights and it was perfect! The room was certainly enough for 2 persons. It was very clean and well equipped. The wifi worked perfectly. Although there was a limit of the electricity usage, we did not find it a problem and used barely half of the quota even if we charged our electronic devices every night and took hot shower at night with the heater on for a while.

The location of the studio is very good, a nice 10-min walk to the center and another 10 mins or so to the old city.

The owners were very nice and friendly. I had some delay with my luggage for 5 days and it was very kind of Ehud to call not only to Tel Aviv but to Jordan to have the problem fixed. He is a kind and intelligent man with whom we had spent some nice time chatting

We see Micky, Ehud's wife less often but she is also a nice lady with good knowledge of the touristic side of Jerusalem.

My wife and I staying in the apartment for 6 nights in January 2013. We greatly enjoyed. It is small but no smaller than a hotel room and you get a mini kitchen with microwave, fridge, etc.

The location is pretty good. It is about 10 minutes to the Plaza and Kings Hotel area (corner of King George & Agron/Ramban).

The owners were very helpful and accommodating. They speak perfect English. The internet was great. Both WiFi and wired ethernet connection were provided and we were able to use out VoIP phone as if we were back home in the United States. The owners provided us with a street map of Jerusalem which was very helpful. The location a safe place in the western part of Jerusalem.

If you are an Orthodox Jew this is a good place to stay as there is a Shabbos clock for the main lights in the apartment and a Plata/hot plate is provided and we were able to have a nice Shabbos meal in the apartment. There is a shul a few minutes away and the walk from Kotel to the apartment on Friday night took us only about 30-35 minutes. Also there are 2 separate beds.

We found the noise from Aza St not to be an issue as the apartment is further off the Street. Also the steps were not an issue for us but for older people could be an issue so keep that in mind.

Overall, we happily recommend this apartment, and have already done so to friends and family.

My wife and I were warmly welcomed by the property owners, who conveniently lived in the same apartment block. They were very accommodating and helpful, and provided everything we needed (including sound advice). The listing was accurate, and we made use of all of the facilities, which were clean and in good working order. The apartment is somewhat set back from the road, and faces away from it, so noise was not an issue.

There are several restaurants within a few minutes' walk of the apartment, and buses also serve the road, going straight into the centre of town. The Old City is only about 20 minutes' walk away, if you fancy walking.

With regards to an earlier reviewer who mentioned overusing the electricity allowance, we made good use of the air conditioning, the stove and the washing machine, and still used barely half of the "free consumption" limit (which is 15 kWh per day).

There is almost no free parking in the area, which is important to be aware of if you are planning to rent a car.

One small downside is that the apartment is on the second floor, so there are something like 30 steps to climb to reach it; beware if you have disability issues. But for us, this was just a small inconvenience outweighed by the excellent location at a very reasonable price.

This was a great place to stay during a recent vacation in Jerusalem. The room was very clean, and it was nice to have a fridge in the room to keep breakfast foods. There's even a hot plate and a few pots and pans for basic cooking, which was nice.

The location is fantastic. It was about a 20-minute walk to Jaffa Gate, and the walk isn't too hilly. There were multiple grocery stores within a few blocks, as well a a bakery and various restaurants and coffee shops. I was travelling alone as a woman, and I felt perfectly safe walking around the neighborhood after dark.

Room has both WiFi and Ethernet connections, which were convenient, and the WiFi was fast and reliable.

The owners were very kind and helpful while I was there.

Do watch your electricity use while you're in the unit, as there are charges for "excessive use." I thought I was being judicious with power use, but I somehow still exceeded the kilowatt limit during my stay. The overage charges weren't terribly expensive (20 ILS), but I was surprised that I didn't stay under the allowed usage.

The apartment was situated in an excellent location within walking distance to the Old City and the new town and shops. Travelling on my own I felt very safe and peaceful. The landlords were very friendly, kind and accommodating and were intent on providing a complete service. The apartment had everything you would need away from home, was very clean and comfortable. I feel that it was very good value for money. I would certainly recommend this property without hesitation : )

The accommodations on 41 Aza Road were clean, comfortable, quiet, within easy walking distance of shuls and other resources, and the hosts were welcoming, helpful and gave us great value for our stay. We definitely reccommend your guest house!!

Dear Micky and Ehud,

I thoroughly enjoyed my three-week stay in your beautifully decorated studio apartment at 41 Aza. You were superb hosts, providing all the comforts of home (with lots of extra touches), and always available to answer questions and to help in other ways.

I knew before I arrived that I'd be staying in a wonderful location, convenient to buses, taxis, shops, restaurants, and a variety of shuls. I was very pleasantly surprised and happy to find, once I arrived, that my apartment also was very private and quiet! Sitting on my balcony in the midst of your lovely potted plants, I truly experienced the "vacation" aspect of my "working vacation" in Jerusalem. I am very much looking forward to staying with you on my next trip to Israel, and hope that you will have an apartment available for me...
